Smart Home Devices and the First Notice of Loss

There has been an increased interest in utilizing smart home devices to help reduce claims, mitigate risk, and better price insurance products. We like to call the data captured from Smart home devices Homeatics. This can be compared to auto telematics which does things like track your phone usage, speed, and braking in cars. With Homeatics, we can track things like occupancy, power failure, and detection of water or smoke which are all indicators of potential claims risk. The biggest opportunity for loss prevention is non-weather-related water such as a burst pipe or a leaky toilet. Devices that can detect this and quickly create a call to action for customers are extremely valuable because homeowners are about 8 times more likely to have a water loss in their home than a theft and on average it costs homeowners 3 times as much.
