Residential Building Code

Louisiana adopted a statewide mandatory residential code that will control. Authority for local amendments will be limited.See PLRB, Louisiana Building Codes for more information on state level codes.

New Orleans adopted the 2012 IRC, statewide. Note that adoptions usually come with amendments. So, it is important to review those amendments in addition to the unamended model code.

New orleans seems to have adopted the 2012 IRC in a roundabout way.  The city adopted the IBC and then added amendments.  See the exception for one and two family dwellings.

Sec. 26-15. – Same—Amendments.

That the following provisions of the International Building Code, 2012 Edition, shall be deleted in their entirety and the following shall be substituted in lieu thereof:

CHAPTER 1
SCOPE AND ADMINISTRATION

SECTION 101 – GENERAL

101.1 Title. These regulations shall be known as the Building Code of The City of New Orleans, Louisiana, hereinafter referred to as "this code".

101.2 Scope. The provisions of the International Building Code shall apply to the construction, alteration, relocation, enlargement, replacement, repair, equipment, use and occupancy, location, maintenance, removal and demolition of every building or structure or any appurtenances connected or attached to such buildings or structures.

Exceptions. Detached one- and two-family dwellings and multiple single-family dwellings (townhouses) not more than three stories a grade plane in height with a separate means of egress and their accessory structures shall comply with the International Residential Code. (See Chapter 35, this Code.) Appendix "J" of the International Residential Code is hereby adopted.

 

New Orleans Municiple Code § 26-15 (Note the link to Chapter 35 goes to something entirely different.  The error is created by the city's page.)  The reference is to Chaper 35 in the 2012 IBC which indicates referenced documents; here in IBC Ch. 35 it means the 2012 IRC.
