Restaurant & Bar Liability

PLRB Claims Conference
April 17 to 20, 2016
Casualty Campus

Operators of restaurants and bars work hard to provide their customers with food and drink, usually in an atmosphere appealing to their target demographic. But that friendly neighborhood establishment may be at risk from liabilities such as "over-serving" liquor to a customer, customers assaulting one another, and customers becoming ill from a food borne illness.

One of the Casualty Campus sessions at the 2016 Claims Conference will be "Restaurant and Bar Liability," presented by Jamie Flowers Corray, Esquire, Litigation Counsel, Illinois Casualty Company, Rock Island, Illinois, and Kyle Roehler, JD, shareholder, Foland Wickens Eisenfelder Roper, Kansas City, Missouri.

At the conclusion of the session, attendees will be able to:

  • Examine Dram Shop Act intoxicant standards, including the "visible intoxication" standard and understand how the standards are applied in practice;
  • Explore typical food borne illness claim and identify tools one can use to quickly determine potential liability;
  • Analyze the circumstances that may give rise to the duty of a restaurant or bar to protect patrons from third-party criminal assault; and
  • Describe the scope of a restaurant or bar's duty to render aid in the event of a medical emergency.

The 2016 Claims Conference features continuing education for casualty adjusters with sessions facilitated by insurance professionals. Two dozen casualty campus sessions are available out of the 100 sessions offered for the continued professional development of both property and casualty adjusters.

The Property & Liability Resource Bureau 2016 Claims Conference will be held April 17 to 20 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio. Registration is open to property and casualty insurance professionals who work for or represent insurance companies.

The 2016 Insurance Services Expo will be held Monday, April 18 and Tuesday, April 19 in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Nearly 300 exhibitors will exhibit with products and services to assist insurers in providing claims services to policyholders.

The Expo showcases skilled national and regional providers of casualty adjustment services, such as legal firms and legal billing review firms. Attendees are invited to enjoy a complimentary lunch with the exhibitors in the Expo hall on both Monday and Tuesday of the conference. They will have an opportunity to enhance their professional development by connecting with a large network of subject matter experts and industry partners during the lunch break.
