Detecting and Investigating Pill Mill Operations

Investigating Potential Fraud Series

Prescription drug abuse, particularly involving opioids, has become a topic of national concern. At the center of this epidemic are physicians, clinics, and pharmacies that illegally operate pill mills where prescription narcotics are dispensed without legitimate medical purpose.

The next Webinar in PLRB's Investigating Potential Fraud series, "Detecting and Investigating Pill Mill Operations," will be held Thursday, November 10, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. Central time.

The session will be presented by Tomi L. Dorris, the Midwest/Central Plains Special Investigative Unit (SIU) Director for Nationwide Insurance. She has worked for over 27 years as a police officer, assistant prosecutor, magistrate judge, director of the Ohio State Police Training Academy, and chief counsel to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The second presenter is Steven Bodge, Major Case Manager for the Nationwide Insurance SIU. He is a former law enforcement officer and detective. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Webinar participants will learn to:

  • Discover the scope of the problem caused by the over prescribing and abuse of prescription drugs;
  • Identify the connection between pill mills, drug diversion, and insurance fraud;
  • Identify various drug diversion schemes utilized by both claimants and providers; and
  • Recognize investigative techniques and methods to reduce losses attributed to drug diversion.

The Webinar is limited to 1,000 participants. It is available at no charge exclusively to employees of PLRB member insurers, as well as Affiliate Member companies.
