Complex Code and Time Element Issues in a Food Processing Loss

2016 PLRB Large Loss Conference

Food processing is a health- and- time-sensitive operation. "Complex Code and Time Element Issues in a Food Processing Loss," is one of the workshops offered at the 2016 PLRB Large Loss Conference in Chicago, October 4 to 6.

"The products are perishable and must be processed quickly," noted Scott Powell, Vice President, Educational and Technical Services, Property & Liability Resource Bureau. "More importantly the food is consumed by humans and must comply with federal, state, and local health codes and laws. A fire in a food processing facility is a major event. Sterile processing equipment is damaged, and smoke and fire suppression water can contaminate processed product."

The workshop will analyze the complicated insurance issues following a fire in a meat processing plant. It will be led by Daniel Leaverton, of PLRB member company AIG, Lisa Ann Enloe, J. S. Held, LLC, Peter Kararis, J.D. Fisher Kanaris, P.C., and Joe Vyhanek, Principal, Thornton Tomasetti.

The key issues the workshop will address include:

  • The first steps to the investigation and adjustment
  • Familiarization with the plant operation and layout
  • The preliminary scope of damage
  • The availability of repair and equipment rentals

The workshop is approved for adjuster continuing education credit in Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas. It has also been approved for educational credit for both CPCU and RPA designees.

The workshops offered at the Large Loss Conference are adjuster-led and encourage active participation. They provide a unique opportunity to learn from and with many of the insurance industry's leading experts.

Classes are offered in three tracks:

  • Commercial Lines, property claims
  • Personal Lines, property claims
  • Casualty Claims

The Large Loss Conference will be held at the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. Senior claim professionals and service providers from across the nation will meet for professional education and development. They will evaluate a variety of large loss claim scenarios through workshops. They will share ideas and adjustment strategies with large loss professionals from across the country. They will also be able to network with large loss adjusters and service providers from across hundreds of disciplines and specialty areas.
