Hail Impacts on the Roofing and Insurance Industries

Hot Topics from the Claims Conference

The next webinar in the Hot Topics from the Claims Conference, "Hail Impacts on the Roofing and Insurance Industries" will be offered Thursday, June 14, 2016, at 11:00 a.m.

The Education Department staff of the Property & Liability Resource Bureau (PLRB) selects some of the best sessions with the hottest claims topics each year at the Claims Conference and offers them as part of the popular webinar series Hot Topics from the Claims Conference. These are typically sessions that have received high ratings from attendees at the Claims Conference.

"Since some of the adjusters working for PLRB member companies are unable to attend the Claims Conference," said Scott Powell, Vice President, Educational and Technical Services for the PLRB, we offer these Hot Topics from the Claims Conference webinars. They provide modified versions of some of the best presentations from the Conference."

"Over the past few years the insurance industry has seen an increase in the number of reported claims involving hail damage," continued Powell, "especially pertaining to roofing."

Hail damage on roofing products is pervasive and complex. Understanding the nature of hail damage, its impact, and the testing used to choose products that are resistant to hail damage is critical to both claims prevention and resolution.

Webinar participants will:

  • Identify the U.S. hail risk and vulnerabilities;
  • Review prevalent roofing impact test standards;
  • Identify hail damage modes;
  • Describe how the use of roofs tested and certified for impact can help mitigate damage; and
  • Review emerging research on hailstone characteristics and radar detection of hail.

"Hail Impacts on the Roofing and Insurance Industries" will be presented by Dr. Tanya Brown-Giammanco, PhD, wind science and engineering, Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, and Dwayne Slone, mechanical engineer, Underwriters Laboratories.

The webinar is available exclusively to employees of PLRB member insurance and Affiliate member companies.
