PLRB Claims Conference
April 17 to 20, 2016
Catastrophic flooding in 2013 devastated the Calgary ZOO, Calgary, Alberta.
The flooding, which caused about $1.7 billion in damages, was the worst flood to-date in Alberta history. The flooding in Calgary affected about 75,000 residents and triggered the largest evacuation in the city's history.
The Calgary Zoo, which is situated on an island in the flood area, sustained substantial damage as a result of the flood. With the damages affecting 46 buildings, and most of the animal enclosures, special restoration techniques were required. Restoration, rebuilding, and re-opening was completed under budget, and ahead of schedule. Within five months the Zoo was fully reopened, at a cost of $35 million in insured damages.
